The Parable of the Bell Sheep
The Good Shepherd watches his sheep. There is always that one sheep that wanders. The good Shepherd quickly wins the good sheep to himself with loving tender care. But, after a while, the sheep grows tired of simply following the Shepherd and begins to wander. Eagerly the sheep would trot off, often the sheep would end up lost. The sheep never minded the trails since through them it often would accompany other lost sheep as well. Without fail, the Shepherd rescued the sheep and brought it back. The Shepherds greatest delight was to have the sheep by his side. The sheep had not taken the time to know the good Shepherd. The sheep would continue to wander until the Good Shepherd would break one of its legs. Bleating in pain and astonishment, the sheep kicked and bit and refused his kind overtures of comfort. Eventually, however, the sheep grew too exhausted from the struggle to fight anymore. In the sheep silent, helpless weariness, he bound up the sheep wounds and cradled the sheep tenderly, carrying the sheep in his arms until the leg healed and the sheep could walk again.
As the sheep recovered, the sheep learned to know the Shepherds heartbeat. The sheep grew to love the mere pleasure of being near the Shepherd. The sheep greatest joy becomes simply belonging to the good Shepherd.
When the sheeps leg healed, and the Shepherd sets the sheep down to walk again, it no longer desires to leave, to wander from his side. The Shepherd then places a bell around the sheep neck. This way as the sheep follows close to the shepherd, the bell continually testified to the presence of the good Shepherd. Wandering sheep often heard the bell and followed its ring back to His side. Wounded or cast sheep heard his approach and bleated for help, and the bell sheep would trot along beside the Shepherd, ringing the good news that help was on its way, as the good Shepherd went to their rescue.
Moreover, He used the bell sheep to accomplish His work without the sheep ever leaving His side. While the sheep never wanted to repeat brokenness, the sheep discovered the Shepherd was all it needed.
I want to be the bell sheep. I want to be so intent on watching my Shepherd, following my savior that his marking, his bell, will be on me. As I grow in love for my father, the Shepherd, I will naturally follow him and it will be evident in my life, my words, my actions. That is my desire that my bell will ring in my words, and actions and that others would hear.
